  • Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional. ——Roger Crawford

    你眼中的女外科医生是什么样的,是这样?

    还是这样?

    下面请看话题:

Some people think that female medical students are not suitable to be a surgeon. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, a heated debate has been ignited towards whether being a surgeon is a sensible life choice for female medical students. Although most people, including those working in medical institutions, hold the view that female surgeons could hardly perform better than their male counterparts. While I would definitely cast a doubt on this point.

Opponients think that female surgeons are often faced with formidable tasks in clinics, which easily overwhelm them, leaving them in a state of out of breath. Consequently, they could barely keep a balance between their work and family and are frequently susceptible to endocrinological disfunction. In addition, some patients would prefer it if their surgery is operated by male surgeons, as these patients believe that the male ones are more trustworthy and of higher sense of responsibility. Last but not least, since most employers perfer to recruit male surgeons for their higher levels of productivity, gender discrimination would place an artificial limits on female students' access to working as a surgeon.

At first sight, what the opponients care about seems reasonable. While I would counter that some female students, if not many, should be encouraged to choose a surgeon as their life career. It is a fair bet that the laborious tasks in large hospitals douse their fervour of surgery, but it would be rash to bet against their qualifications for a surgeon. It should be noted that the surgeon is a multifacetedcareer where they are not only required to perform the operation, but also responsible for making important decisions about the patient's safety and welfare before the operation, and providing the patient with postoperative surgical care and treatment to alleviate suffering. Granted that female doctors are more prudent, careful and sensible than their male counterparts, petients would get better outcome if they were treated by female doctors, which has already been documented in JAMA Intern Med. <1>  Interestingly, it is also well documented that patients treated by female surgeons had a small but statistically significant decrease in 30 day mortality and similar surgical outcomes (length of stay, complications, and readmission), compared with those treated by male surgeons <2>.  Taking these studies into consideration, female surgeons could be as eligible as male surgeons, if not better. From the patients' view, female surgeons are more than welcome when it comes to some physical examinations and surgery related to personal privacy. On the other hand, from the surgeons' point, female doctors could develop a sense of independence. What's more, since the surgeon is a special kind of job that can always earn respects from their friends and families, being a surgeon can help women to increase their status in a family, to say the least, and promote the sexual equality in the whole society, to say the most.

In conclusion, being a surgeon does have advantages and drawbacks for female medical students. They should weigh up the pros and cons before making the choice.
